Tournament Recap

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”

Any other time, that would apply, however when you go on an epic golf trip with Am Golf Trips, we have to share the story, just not maybe all of it!

Paiute Resort was built as a premier Las Vegas golf venue that is as “pure as pure gets”, and after 3 rounds of golf, it’s safe to say everyone would agree it was pure and top notch. The staff and team at the resort were fantastic and really made everyone feel safe and welcomed!

Players who arrived early on Friday started with a little “pregame” at MGM where they checked in for the weekend and got the opportunity to meet other golfers and the Am Golf Trip team. Some players even got a chance to meet some celebrities including Charles Barkley!

Rounds 1 and 2 were played on Saturday and were meant to be a test of endurance - who could tame the desert for 36 holes? Players started the day with a great Swag bag compliments of Swag, Tempercraft, LinksDrinks and Ampcaddy. Each player received a limited edition headcover from Swag, a custom designed Ampcaddy speaker, along with some cold LinksDrinks!

Round 1 started out with a bang on the Sun Mountain Course, as the field teed it up with the $6,000 prize pool and $1,000 daily/round skins game on the line. It was a crisp start to the day, but the sun popped out and the winds were down allowing for a much welcomed great weather day. Round 1 saw a host of great shots and when the dust settled, 4 players took home skins at $250.00 a piece: Joe Renzi, Bobby Lesher, Dena Capitani and Ben Kilborn. Kilborn and teammate Matt Inch jumped out to the early lead in the Gross division shooting -2 under, good for a 1 shot lead. In the net division, Brian Loftin and Nick Tudor were tied with Luke Henning & Jim Ranweiler were tied at the top after shooting matching 6 under 66s (net).

The next test of the tournament was the afternoon round on the Snow Mountain course.  Players were delivered lunch on the course and then a quick restack of carts the players were off to complete the 2nd round in the desert.  Endurance and patience were tested as the winds picked up a bit and thus the scores were higher.  After 4 skins in round 1, we saw 7 in round two: Brandon Tudor (2), Cameron Spellman, Zach Senger, James Macdonald, Joe Corsei, and John Renzi.  Round 2 also brought new leaders to both divisions, as George Tudor and Peter Skiba fired an even round 72, bringing their 2 round total to 1 under, 143 good for a 1 shot lead over Kilborn and Inch.  On the net side, the father-daughter combo of Rob Spellman and Cameron Spellman caught the round 1 leaders Henning and Ranweiler after shooting 3 under in the afternoon to finish the day with a 2 round total of 136.

After a long day of golf, players enjoyed the Las Vegas night scene on their own (and that’s where the stories will stay in Vegas).  The final round was the next day, Super Bowl Sunday.

Round 3 started on the Wolf course at Paiute Resort. Players were welcomed with the best weather day of the trip, bright blue sunny skies and little wind made the final round intriguing. Round 3 found 4 players win a skin: John Renzi, Mike Powell, Trent Haldiman, and Justin Nagel.  Players raved all weekend long about the course conditions but the greens were ultra-slick and played the role of the villian for the weekend. In the Gross division, it was a tight leaderboard for much of the day, but when Peter Skiba rolled in his 3rd birdie of the day, the lead grew to 3 shots and that’s where it stayed, giving Tudor and Skiba the championship! 2nd place went to Marc Dawson and Pete Studer who won a scorecard playoff over Ben Kilborn and Matt Inch.

n the net division, the competition wasn’t final until the last hole, creating some tense moments. Team Spellman was clinging to a 1 shot lead. Team Henning + Ranweiler needed a birdie on the last hole to force a playoff. They had an attempt, but the villain (greens and green speed) played their part as the putt slid past the hole. Team Spellman claimed the Am Golf Trips Super Bowl Net championship with a 3 round total of 202. Henning and Ranweiler finished second at 203, while Zach Senger and Randy Ellis finished 3rd at 206.

After the final round, the players were able to sit back and relax at the LinksDrinks Super Bowl Party. Players enjoyed an all you can eat food menu, complimentary LinksDrinks, raffles, square pools and most importantly exchanged great golf stories throughout the weekend.

“What an amazing event, great weather, great people and a great venue,” said AMGolf Trips co-founder Rob Maguire. “The courses were amazing and didn’t disappoint one bit, our players had a blast!” said Maguire.

“We want to thank our Trip partners, Swag Golf, AmpCaddy, Tempercraft and of course our Super Bowl party sponsor: LinksDrinks. The players loved the transfusions and wanted more! From start to finish, the weekend was a blast,” said AMGolf Trips co-founder Matt Grubich.

Up next for Am Golf Trips is a trip to the American Club, home of the 2021 Ryder Cup. Players will be treated to a true players experience, where they get a chance to play 3 world class golf courses, including the famed Whistling Straits. 2 of the 3 rounds will allow players the use of caddies, it will be a can’t miss event: May 14-16 The field is limited to 60 teams, so don’t wait to register. After successful events at Sand Valley Big Cedar Lodge and now Paiute Resort, word is spreading fast about these unique Trips, don’t miss out — spots are filling up quickly.
